What will it take to turn the opportunity of the Common Core into reality in every classroom, school, and district? Continuing its tradition of mathematics education leadership, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has undertaken a major initiative to define and describe the principles and actions, including specific teaching practices, that are essential for a high-quality mathematics education for all students. Principles to Action: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All offers guidance to teachers, mathematics coaches, administrators, parents, and policymakers by providing a research-based description of eight essential Mathematics Teaching Practices and the conditions, structures, and policies that must support them. It builds on NCTM’s principals and standards for school mathematics and supports implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics to attain much higher levels of mathematics achievement for all students. The book also identifies obstacles and key actions that must be understood and addressed by all stakeholders. Finally, the book encourages teachers of mathematics to engage students in mathematical thinking, reasoning, and sense making to significantly strengthen teaching and learning.

    Impressive
I’ve read many teacher professional development books and this is definitely one that I’ll refer back to throughout the year. The author gives many examples of how math education is in need of a makeover. Teaching math is not simple. The author understands this and guides readers in to reflecting on their current practice. I thought that the content was relatable and spot on. I highly encourage math teachers to find this book and take a read.

    The next vision by NCTM
Well written and purposeful. The vision is clear and the path unfolding. As a math education leader I would recommend we all begin to read and begin to design these principles into action!
